Do you feeling like you’re camping, or making do in your home? A guest or an interloper in a space that doesn’t feel like it’s truly yours?  This comes from a variety of reasons, but sometimes it’s the result of a move, and it’s actually something that’s often really quite simple to fix.

Many clients speak to us about how a space doesn’t feel bright and welcoming. When our lead designer Sophie is invited into someone’s new space, we find that they are missing the details that can make the space feel inviting and warm. When we start a new project, sometimes an empty space that hasn’t been furnished yet or a ‘too hard’ room, we’ll look at how to incorporate that room into the rest of the house to add the feeling of warmth and friendliness that makes a space feel really comfortable.

While clutter is rarely a good idea, it’s a myth that an empty room always feels bigger and lighter.  Adding in the interesting things adds a lot of depth the space, it makes a journey for the eye giving you things to look at. Bringing favorite pieces that remind you of good times and places will bring you comfort and joy (without resorting to clutter) and adding new art and furnishings that work in with your brief will always add warmth and welcoming.

Living room

Recently at a workshop with a client we were able to take underutilized spaces that had no clear purpose and create a master plan on how the rooms can be used.  During the workshop the client was able to see how adding a focal point through large art on the wall will draw people into the space, the clever placement of furniture, lamps, mirrors and rugs will help the space feel bigger and that a sense of flow between rooms will make the transition between spaces seamless and a feeling the whole space is now being used.  By the end of the workshop this client had a very clear direction to be able to make decisions which they were able to begin implementing that day. They now have furnished their living room within a couple of weeks of our workshop after months of indecision and feeling as though they were camping out in their home.
